Surface Names Pratt in Venice alumna Lilian Day Thorpe Avant Guardian

Pratt in Venice alumna ('13) Lilian Day Thorpe has recently been featured in an Inside Pratt article.

Surface has named Lilian Day Thorpe (M.S. History of Art and Design ’17) an Avant Guardian in the contemporary design magazine’s 15th annual photography competition. Thorpe is one of 10 U.S.-based photographers who received the prestigious award that annually recognizes new and emerging talent. A showcase of the winning work will appear in Surface’s October 2015 issue and in an exhibition at an upcoming special issue launch event.

In 2014, Thorpe received a B.F.A. in Photography from Pratt, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in History of Art and Design at the Institute. Being inspired by painters and the Pictorialist movement of photography, Thorpe uses Photoshop to create photo-based montages from her own original photographs. The results are fictional landscapes that resemble paintings more than photographs.

Leaders in the field of photography serve as judges for the annual Avant Guardian competition. This year, the chair of Pratt’s Photography Department Stephen Hilger was a member of the esteemed panel that also included Hélène Binet, Ingmar Kurth, Delfino Sisto Legnani, Youssef Nabil, and Roy Schwalbach.
